Hi!

Welcome to DIY Darling! I'm a twenty-something figuring out how to design my dream life on a dime. Let's take this journey together!

How to Hang Curtains like a Pro

How to Hang Curtains like a Pro

If you’ve ever struggled to hang curtains, I’m here to tell you it’s a simple formula that works every time. And I’ve got your back! Continue reading to learn my fool-proof curtain hanging rules that help make my home look elevated, cozy and put together.

Curtain Hanging Formula = High + Wide + Kiss the Floor + Quality Rod

84 inch curtains too short on a window
96 inch curtains are the perfect height for most windows

A lot of retailers sell 84” curtains and I am here to tell you that most of the time, these will be too short for your windows. Of course, there are always exceptions, but before you break design rules you have to learn them! To be safe, go for 96” long curtains and hang them 10 - 12” above the window. This will work great for 8 foot ceilings, but if you have even taller ceiling heights, there are often 108” long curtain options, as well as fully custom panels (which may be more expensive). Choosing the proper curtain length is the first step to getting a designer-looking home.

A perfect example of how much of a difference hanging curtains the right way makes. The window to the right looks bigger and taller, making the whole room feel more open and grand. I know which one I think looks better!

Be sure to hang your curtains wider than the window. A good rule of thumb is 4 - 6” out from the window sill.

For a contemporary look, the hems of the curtain panels should just “kiss the floor”, without any gaps showing or any extra fabric puddling at the bottom. Two options here - you can either measure and hang the curtain rod high enough to achieve this, or you can hem the bottom of the curtain panels. I personally like the hang-high-enough method.

A sturdy, quality curtain rod will make a massive difference. Often, the fabric comprising the curtain panels is heavy, which can cause flimsy rods to bow or even break. The more substantial rods will cost more up front, but you’ll never have to replace them once installed. I like West Elm or Pottery Barn curtain rods for that reason.

My Favorite Curtains:

To wrap up, I’ve included a roundup of some of my favorite curtains at the moment! I love using pattern on my window treatments, as I think it’s a fun way to create dimension in your home. You can have a neutral room and add curtains with a little pattern and BAM! You’re space looks custom and “designed”. Don’t be afraid to go bold and have a little fun!
