Color Trim + White Walls
I had a vision for our primary bedroom makeover and a huge part of that was painting the walls, doors, and trim. And while I love embracing color throughout our home, I wanted the bedroom to feel fresh yet calming. Modern yet inviting. Color trim with white walls was the perfect answer.

When I came across this inspiration image, I felt like I’d found what I was looking for. There is just enough visual interest without overpowering the space. And I loved the warmth of the doors and trim to highlight the lighter wood furniture we’d picked out for the dresser and bed.
Maybe you’re like me and you’ve been seeing color trim and white walls pop up all over social media lately, but it’s actually a combination that has been around for hundreds of years. If you take a tour of an older (or refurbished) Victorian homes, you’ll see millwork painted all sorts of colors. The range goes from subtle (like ours) to high contrast. It just goes to show that contrast trim won’t go out of style!
Now if you have white trim, don’t think you’re old school! That will also always looks beautiful. Or, if you’ve given color-drenching a try (when the trim is painted the same color as the walls), don’t think you need to pull out your paintbrush and make some changes. I guess my point is that there will always be a new “thing” and you should just do whatever you like. Right?

So… back to our primary bedroom makeover. My plan was to paint the walls in Pure White by Sherwin Williams (a personal favorite), which left me with the decision of what color to go with for the trim.

Even without the walls paint in Pure White, it was helpful to see the samples up on a door. And what’s funny is that I was so sure I would go with Anew Gray (pictured as the top sample). This highlights the importance of actually going to the store and purchasing samples before committing to a color. You ultimately save a lot of time and money!
After staring at the paint swatches for a day or so, I decided to go with Dumpling. It was the perfect warm + subtle look I was aiming for. I grabbed my husband to help and we painted the walls first, then the trim after.
I absolutely love how it turned out. The biggest compliment came from my sister (a notorious neutrals-only decorator) who said she was inspired after seeing our room to repaint her whole house like this! Not that she’ll actually do it… but the sentiment was nice.
