DIY Travel: A Trip to Las Gaviotas

A quick 40 minute drive past the San Diego border will get you to the idyllic, beach-front community of Las Gaviotas in Baja California, Mexico. A friend had invited us for the weekend to celebrate her birthday, and not only was it incredibly fun, it was also insanely cheap. A perfect combination that I guarantee will provide optimal relaxation.

To give an example of the low cost, we had a six bedroom house and each spent $98 FOR THE ENTIRE WEEKEND. And we were steps from the beach! In my opinion, it doesn’t get any better than that. Check out their website for a variety of house sizes and rental prices.

Here’s a total breakdown of my expenses:

Lodging $98 (Two nights)

Travel $13 (Our car had 4 people in it, so gas total was $52)

Groceries $26 (This covered breakfast + snacks + beer)

Restaurants $50 (Includes taco stands + both dinners + churros/coffee)

Total = $187 (Honestly, looking at how low that number is, how could you not go?!)

Across the street was White Horse, a market & liquor store with cats lounging among the avocados and limes. Colectivo Surf Brewing was next door. There was live music at night, corn hole sets available, and of course, plenty of yummy things to drink.

5 minutes up the road is K38 Taco Stand, the perfect place to get authentic al pastor tacos when you want a break from the beach. If you’re a coffee junkie like me, drive 15 minutes into Rosarito to Cafe de la Fonda and be sure to order a churro with your cappuccino.

Have groceries, beer, and liquor with you and enjoy making dinner with your friends while you watch the sunset over the water. Life doesn’t get any better!
